October 4, 2023 - the Republican Dilemma, Three Cacti, the Nobel Prize Award for Medicine, Three Miracles, and a new Trivia Quiz

The Republican Party’s Dilemma

The Freedom Caucus in Action

What more can I say about the resignation of Kevin McCarthy from the speakership?  The real solution is to vote Republicans out of office wherever possible. With few and rare exceptions, they are up to no good.  Meanwhile, here's hoping the nation survives until that is accomplished in 2024.

Nobel Prize Awarded to Scientists Whose Discoveries Made Covid Vaccines Possible

Here’s a timely reminder to all, regardless of age, to get the latest Covid booster vaccination, made possible by the work of the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize for medicine, announced on Tuesday.

Vaccinations are the best way of avoiding the spreading to others of the virus that causes Covid. This is reality.  I am sure these scientists are getting their boosters!  This is unselfish. Here is the announcement of this award:

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has today decided to award the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19

The discoveries by the two Nobel Laureates were critical for developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020. Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.’

 Showing Your True Colors

About three years ago, I purchased some miniature cacti at Home Depot and placed them near my kitchen window.  Like most cacti, they are green, but these had been dyed otherwise by the grower.  Since then, all subsequent growth has been in their natural color, green.  There’s a moral to this somewhere, regarding how long one can pretend to be something they are not, like a yellow, orange, or red cactus.

Here they are, each no more than four inches above their ground level, as I posed them on my kitchen table this morning, before returning them to their permanent home on the windowsill.

Three Miracles and Super Judges

It is indeed a miracle that despite the ‘thumb on the scale’ that the Electoral College applies to the way we elect the nation’s president, we manage to elect Democrats to that office.

It is another miracle that gives Democrats control of the Senate even though States with miniscule populations have as many Senators as those with much larger populations.  For example, way back in 1889 when the Dakota Territory was admitted into the Union, it was as two States, North and South Dakota, each with two Senators.  Today, these four Senators represent about 1,700,000 people, while there are ten States with populations in excess of ten million people each with just two Senators. This was no accident.

It is another miracle that the Democrats even come within a few votes of a majority in the House of Representatives, where State legislatures have created gerrymandered House districts resulting in artificial Republican majorities.

But there are no such miracles happening with the Supreme Court.   For an incisive opinion on that problem, check out retired lawyer Marty London’s thoughts on his blog by visiting https://londonsbh.blogspot.com/  or just by CLICKING HERE.   Check out what he wrote about three months ago on July 9, 2023, about ‘Super Judges.’ I agree with his suggestion, but his recipe for getting there is very demanding.  The best solution is by voting Republicans out of office everywhere in 2024, if we can preserve democracy until then.

Housekeeping on Jackspotpourri

Email Alerts:  If you are NOT receiving emails from me alerting you each time there is a new posting on Jackspotpourri, just send me your email address and we’ll see that you do.  And if you are forwarding a posting to someone, you might suggest that they do the same, so they will be similarly alerted. You can pass those email addresses to me by email at jacklippman18@gmail.com.

Forwarding Postings: Please forward this posting to anyone you think might benefit from reading it. Friends, relatives, enemies, etc.

If you want to send someone the blog, exactly as you are now seeing it, with all of its bells and whistles, you can just tell folks to check it out by visiting https://jackspotpourri.blogspot.com or by providing a link to that address in your email to them.   I think this is the best method of forwarding Jackspotpourri.

There’s another, perhaps easier, method of forwarding it though!   Google Blogspot, the platform on which Jackspotpourri is prepared, makes that possible.  If you click on the tiny envelope with the arrow at the bottom of every posting, you will have the opportunity to list up to ten email addresses to which that blog posting will be forwarded, along with a comment from you.  Each will receive a link to the textual portion only of the blog that you are now reading, but without the illustrations, colors, variations in typography, or the 'sidebar' features such as access to the blog's archives.

Either way will work, sending them the link to https://jackspotpourri.blogspot.com, or clicking on the envelope at the bottom of this posting, but I recommend sending them the link.

Again, I urge you to forward this posting to anyone you think might benefit from reading it.
