Become Part of the Solution

Tim Walz, in accepting the Democratic vice-presidential nomination, urged his audience, there and on TV, to become active in supporting Kamala Harris for president.  But just voting for Harris and other Democratic candidates isn’t quite enough to get the job done. Democratic supporters have to get to work to spread the word and see that others, independents and even Republicans, support her too, especially in those ‘battleground’ States (the number of which seem to be increasing daily)!  Walz, apparently a comedian (besides being a farmer, a teacher, a football coach, a veteran, a sharpshooter, a former congressman, and currently governor of Minnesota), pointed out that ‘there’s plenty of time to sleep after you’re dead.’ Remember IF YOU’RE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU MAY BE PART OF THE PROBLEM

Practicing the Politics of Joy

Become Active! If you can afford to make a donation to Harris’ campaign and those of Democratic Senate and House candidates, please consider doing so! Kamala’s message, as the signs at her rallies point out, is that ‘If We Fight, We Win’ and that ‘If We Vote, We Win.’ Her supporters must do both.

But I know you’re not dummies and that you are entitled to know where Kamala Harris stands on important issues. She is the Democratic standard bearer in the election campaign. Walz, now that he is nominated for vice-president, is back in a secondary position.

To try to learn where Kamala stands, I refer you to a CNN article published this past week on that subject. Copy and paste https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2024/08/politics/kamala-harris-key-issues-dg/ on your browser line or CLICK HERE.  It may help a little, but not much.

Candidates who are very specific and definitive in their campaign promises risk losing as well as gaining support, and of that Harris seems to be well aware, so she chooses her words carefully.  By the debate scheduled with her opponent a month from now, her positions, and the Democratic Party's platform will become clearer.

Generally, the article suggests that Harris is no longer way over on the left with the most progressive Democrats where she was in her abortive 2020 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, having moved a little bit toward the center.

Her background as a prosecutor and California attorney-general is reappearing. When an audience chanted ‘Lock him up’ after she had criticized her convicted felon opponent, she silenced them, saying, ‘That’s for the courts!’

Gone are Harris’ 2020 ideas about a ‘single-payer’ health care program and ‘defunding the police,’ but the emphasis on governing to best serve American families’ economic livelihood and voting rights still seems her highest priority, as it is with Joe Biden. She remains adamant in defending abortion rights and those of LGBTQ Americans. She is strongly in support of Ukraine against Russian aggression, as well as of a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians, where it also appears that she will be less tolerant of Benjamin Netanyahu who, along with some Palestinians, prefer an exclusionary one-state solution, which would solve nothing.

What Harris will do to address the illegal immigration problem here is still a gray area. The Republicans are screaming that she was unable to accomplish anything in that area, but they ignore the fact that her specific role was limited to working with the governments of the nations to our South to improve conditions there, thereby reducing immigration, and not dealing with the human crisis at the border directly. Now. of course, the whole ball of wax will be in her hands when she becomes 'Madame President.'

With an opponent whose election would clearly be a threat to our Constitution and our representative democracy, and with the appearance of fascism masquerading as 'Christian Nationalism,' permeating the Republican Party, Kamala Harris’ standing up in defense of our traditional democratic principles is clearly a position that demands the support of all Americans regardless of party affiliation.

Housekeeping on Jackspotpourri

Strange “Hits’! The large number of those accessing Jackspotpouri from Singapore and Hong Kong has somewhat lessened.  I suspect that the Chinese are playing around with internet transmissions, possibly to try to identify who is reading them.

Email Alerts: If you are NOT receiving emails from me alerting you each time there is a new posting on Jackspotpourri, just send me your email address and we’ll see that you do. And if you are forwarding a posting to someone, you might suggest that they do the same, so they will be similarly alerted. You can pass those email addresses to me by email at jacklippman18@gmail.com.

Forwarding Postings: Please forward this posting to anyone you think might
benefit from reading it (Friends, relatives, enemies, etc.) If you want to send someone the blog, you can just tell them to check it out by visiting https://jackspotpourri.blogspot.com or you can provide a link to that address in your email to them. There’s another, perhaps easier, method of forwarding it though!

Google Blogspot, the platform on which Jackspotpourri is prepared, makes that possible. If you click on the tiny envelope with the arrow at the bottom of every posting, you will have the opportunity to list up to ten email addresses to which that blog posting will be forwarded, along with a brief comment from you. Each will receive a link to click on that will directly connect them to the blog.

Either way will work, sending them the link to https://jackspotpourri.blogspot.com, or clicking on the envelope at the bottom of this posting.

Again, I urge you to forward this posting to anyone you think might benefit from reading it, particularly if they are a registered voter. This is an election year. Spread the word.
